Call for Actuarial Student Outreach Volunteers

The CAA receives requests from high school and college students interested in learning more about the actuarial profession. We’re also asked to provide speakers for local high school and college career fairs. We would like to build a list of CAA members who are interested in participating when we receive these opportunities. We’re seeking volunteers who would be willing to do any of the following:

  • Allow a high school or college student to shadow them at work.
  • Talk to individual students about the actuarial profession.
  • Present to groups of students at career fairs.
  • “Sponsor” a high school student who is interested in attending a CAA meeting (accompany them to the meeting, interact with them and introduce them to other actuaries attending the meeting)

Please email contactus@chicagoactuarialassociation.org if you’re interested in adding your name to our listing of actuaries who would like to participate! Please indicate which of the listed opportunities interests you.

SOA Candidate Connect Wrap Up

The Chicago Actuarial Association would like to thank the the Society of Actuaries for the opportunity to host the November Candidate Connect event. Featuring multiple keynote speakers, including John Adduci and Tom Edwalds of the CAA, the day’s events at the O’Hare Westin brought together 130 actuarial students and career changers.  Speakers offered their perspectives on the challenges and rewards of the profession, its future and their personal journeys to becoming actuaries.

The format of the event was open and interactive, offering a forum to ask speakers questions and concluding with a two-hour long networking reception that gave candidates a chance to meet with local employers and speak with presenters.

The event’s atmosphere was energetic and welcoming, showcasing the candidates’ diverse backgrounds, talents and interests which will help shape the profession’s future..

Candidate Connect: Call for Employers

SOA Candidate Connect – November 14, 2014 11:30 am – 5:30 pm
The Westin O’Hare
Rosemont, IL

The Chicago Actuarial Association is partnering with the SOA to bring the “Candidate Connect” event to Chicago.

This event is tailored for pre-ASA actuarial candidates in the process of taking exams. It will provide the candidate with information and the opportunity to network and meet with actuaries in the Chicagoland area. Gain insights into the actuarial profession, learn about what qualities employers are seeking, and build your professional network by connecting with SOA leaders, practicing actuaries, fellow candidates and employer representatives.

The SOA will sponsor candidate attendance and waives meeting costs, although a $10 administrative fee will be charged upon registration.

Employers / Members: We would like to invite actuarial employers to join us at this event. Your company is more than welcome to:

  • Send 2-3 representatives: Candidates enjoy talking with company representatives especially practicing actuaries or company recruiters. They will appreciate the opportunity to learn about your company and your advice on how to prepare for their actuarial career.
  • If you’d like to set up an exhibit table, we have space available at the networking reception area. It’s also a great opportunity to increase your brand awareness among the future actuarial community.

There’s NO fee or charge for your company’s participation.

Should your company be interested in this opportunity, please fill out the attached form CC Chicago_Employer Registration and email to Xiaoyan Anderson, SOA Candidate Relations Specialist at xanderson@soa.org before Friday, Oct. 31.
