Understanding the Individual Life and Annuity Product Development Process

Two years and over 3000 data points later, an extensive investigation of the US and Canadian individual life and annuity product development process has been completed by the Society Of Actuaries, with the assistance of RGA and LIMRA. This study can provide insights on the pain points and points of interest that participants expressed through a survey of the entire product development process. Come hear key highlights of the study, with some perspectives specific to smaller insurance companies and international product development processes that can help you benchmark your own product development process.

Donna Megregian, FSA, MAAA is a member of the research team for the SOA project on understanding the Product Development of Individual Life Insurance and Annuity products. She is Vice President and Actuary in the US mortality markets division of RGA, with responsibilities of managing RGA’s actuarial services. These actuarial services include product development, competitive intelligence, benchmarking and general industry knowledge. Before joining RGA in 2013, Donna was a consulting actuary with the Indianapolis office of Milliman focusing on product developing of life and annuity insurance products. Before Milliman, Donna worked in product development for Lincoln Financial, Zurich Life and CNO Financial. Show volunteers on American Academy of Actuary committees as chair of Life Illustrations work group and member of the nonguaranteed element and Nonforfeiture improvement workgroups. He is chair of the product track for the life and annuity symposium, and on organizations committees for the annual meeting and underwriting issues and innovation seminar. Donna frequently speaks for industry meetings and writes for various industry publications and was chosen as an SOA Outstanding Volunteer in 2013.

NAIC/LATF and PBR Update

This presentation will provide regulatory updates and review highlights from recent LATF conference calls as well as the December 2016 NAIC meeting in Miami. Particular attention will be given to the rollout of Principles Based Reserves methodology, including a brief overview.

Jason Kehrberg is Vice President of Sales at PolySystems where he manages PBR readiness and works with clients to help them use PolySystems actuarial software to meet their end-to-end actuarial modeling needs at the product and enterprise level. Prior to joining PolySystems Jason was director of financial modeling at an insurance company and worked for 12 years as a consultant primarily in the area of modeling. Jason is a frequent speaker at industry events and currently serves on the SOA’s Financial Reporting and Technology section councils.

Bill Kelley is an Actuarial Analyst at PolySystems working closely with VM-20 compliance. Prior to joining PolySystems, Bill was a high school physics teacher. He graduated from Illinois State University with a BS degree in Physics and a Minor in Mathematics.

FASB Changes

New GAAP for Insurance Companies – it’s coming!

FASB has already adopted changes for P&C. Now it is our turn. Big changes to US GAAP are coming, and likely soon. FASB in 2016 released an Exposure Draft of changes to current financial reporting for life insurance companies. The comments are in. This session will highlight what was in the Exposure Draft and review what commentators liked and didn’t like in the Draft. What will be easier? What will be harder? How do you prepare?

Doug consults with insurance companies on software systems implementation and general actuarial consulting. Prior to joining msg global solutions, Doug spent 11 years at PolySystems, Inc. Doug participated in drafting the Financial Reporting Committee of the AAA’s response to the FASB ED. He is also active with the International Actuarial Association drafting a practice note on IFRS 17.

Presentation

Hakan F. Karagul joined the Portfolio Analytics department of Enova International in 2012 and currently serves as Portfolio Analytics Manager, responsible for leading a team of analysts and analytics initiatives for NetCredit and Headway Capital. Prior to Enova, Hakan held various research positions (North Carolina State University (NCSU) and Xerox) while working towards receiving his Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering at NCSU in 2012. Before starting his Ph.D., Hakan served as Supply Chain Engineer for Mercedes-Benz Turkey. He received his Masters in Industrial and Systems Engineering from NCSU and his BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University.
