EVENT:October 2014 Meeting

TOPIC:  Serving the Public
We have special guests this month!  Our first guest is State Representative Scott Drury.  Rep. Drury serves on the House Personnel and Pensions Committee, is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney who prosecuted financial crimes, and confesses to spending Saturdays reading actuarial valuations and reports. Rep. Drury is going to discuss the importance of accurate actuarial information in the legislative process and how he believes public plan actuarial work can better serve the public interest.  Rep. Drury is excited to be here, as he looks to our profession to provide the information necessary for informed policy discussions.
Tom Terry, president of the Academy, will then respond to Rep. Drury’s suggestions and discuss the Actuarial Standards Board’s current call for comments with respect to public pension plans standards – an invitation open to all actuaries and public pension plan stakeholders.  Tom will discuss the evolving thinking at the Academy, ASB, and ABCD with respect to public pension plan actuarial work and recent public pension news.
We hope that you will attend this session and then consider submitting your own comments to the ASB.  Everyone in Illinois is a public pension stakeholder – in one of the most financially stressed states in the country.

SPEAKERS:

Scott Drury, State Representative, Illinois House, District 58
Scott Drury is currently serving his first term as State Representative for Illinois’ 58th District. As State Representative, Scott is an outspoken advocate for government reform, transparency and ethics. During the 2013 legislative session, Scott successfully pursued a reform agenda, with another representative describing a criminal justice reform bill sponsored by Scott as one of the most significant pieces of legislation on which the General Assembly would vote that year.
Scott serves on the following committees: Judiciary, Personnel and Pensions, Insurance, Higher Education, Tollway Oversight, and Human Services – Appropriations.
Scott is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney and currently practices law at a prominent Chicago law firm. As State Representative, Scott seeks to usher in a new era of government in Illinois, one defined by credibility and responsibility, not corruption and political expediency. Scott has quickly established himself as an independent voice, who will work with Democrats, Republicans and Independents to solve Illinois’ fiscal problems and the many other challenges Illinois faces.
In 2003, Scott left a successful legal career at a Chicago law firm in order to serve the public as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, working under Patrick Fitzgerald. For over 7 years, Scott vigorously fought for justice for Illinois residents by prosecuting and convicting criminals of all kinds, including a high-level member of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s administration, white-collar criminals, child sex offenders and violent criminals.
Scott grew up in Highland Park and currently lives in Highwood with his wife, Shelby, and two children. Scott is an adjunct professor at the Northwestern University School of Law.
