November 2000 Meeting

Topic:  Codification of Statutory Accounting Principles

Currently, statutory reporting is driven by a complex set of specific rules, but there is no framework of concepts and principles that can be applied to situations not governed by the rules.  In the absence of such guidance, different companies treat the same accounting situation in different (inconsistent) ways.  A major effort was undertaken over the last few years to codify SAP, following a pattern similar to GAAP.  Alan Close, who has been intimately involved in the codification project and has made many presentations on the topic, will provide an overview of its main features.  This subject should be of general interest to all actuaries.
